Born in October 1929, Violet King Henry made history as the first Black woman lawyer in Canada and the first Black person to graduate from law school in Alberta. Her journey wasn’t easy, she broke barriers in an era when opportunities for both women and people of colour were extremely limited. Violet King Henry dedicated her life to justice, equality and representation, using her platform to fight discrimination and advocate for fair employment practices. She paved the way for generations of young dreamers who continue to challenge the status quo and make their mark in every field imaginable.
At Big Dreamers, we celebrate changemakers like Violet King Henry through our Big Dreamers Activity Book series — a fun, engaging way to introduce children to Black Canadian history and international Black women trailblazers who changed the world.
Each of our three volumes highlights inspiring stories of leaders, artists, scientists and activists from Canada and beyond — reminding children (and adults!) that representation matters and that dreams can truly change the world.
Now that the school year is in full swing, there’s no better time to explore resources that blend education, diversity and creativity. The Big Dreamers Activity Books are perfect for classrooms, homeschoolers and families looking to make learning meaningful and inclusive.
These beautifully illustrated books combine learning and play, with stories, puzzles, colouring pages and thought-provoking activities that help children discover Black excellence while nurturing their curiosity and confidence.
