The Importance of Canadian Black History and How Big Dreamers Celebrates It

Understanding history is vital to shaping our identity, fostering a sense of belonging, and appreciating the contributions of those who came before us. When we explore Canadian history, it is essential to acknowledge the significant role that Black Canadians have played in shaping our country. Despite often being overlooked in mainstream history lessons, the contributions of Black Canadians are rich and deeply rooted in our nation’s heritage. The lack of resources regarding Canadian Black History is the reason why I started my company and why I have a range of products that reflect Black Canadian heritage, Black culture, multiculturalism, and more.

Why Canadian Black History Matters

Canadian Black history is not just about the past; it’s about understanding the present and creating a brighter future. From early Black settlers like Mathieu Da Costa, who arrived in the 1600s, to pioneers like Viola Desmond and athletes like Harry Jerome, Black Canadians have made an indelible mark on culture, law, education, the arts, and activism. Learning about these individuals inspires future generations, helps dismantle stereotypes, and reinforces the importance of diversity in the Canadian identity.

Canadian Black history also emphasizes the resilience, determination, and creativity of Black Canadians who, despite systemic oppression and racism, thrived and contributed meaningfully to society. These stories are CRUCIAL in providing young people—especially Black youth—with role models and a sense of pride in their heritage.

Big Dreamers: Inspiring and Educating Through Storytelling

At Big Dreamers, we are committed to celebrating and sharing the stories of trailblazing Black Canadians with young audiences. Our products, especially Big Dreamers Canadian Black History Activity Colouring Books Volume 1 & 2 , are designed to make learning about Black Canadian history both engaging and accessible.

Through these activity colouring books, we highlight key figures like Gloria Baylis, who courageously fought racial segregation, and Lincoln Alexander, the first Black Member of Parliament and Governor-General of Ontario. These activity books not only tell the stories of these important individuals but also allow children to interact with history creatively. By combining education with art, we encourage young learners to connect emotionally and intellectually with the material, reinforcing the importance of these stories in a memorable way.

Empowering Future Generations Through Our Products

At Big Dreamers, we believe that every child deserves to see themselves represented in the history they learn. Our activity books empower young Black Canadians to dream big and understand that they too can become trailblazers.

It’s also important to note that these books are for all children. Learning about diverse experiences fosters empathy, cultural awareness, and a more inclusive understanding of Canada’s heritage. Through these books, children from all backgrounds can appreciate the depth of Black Canadian history and the individuals who helped shape the country we live in today.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to develop new products at Big Dreamers, such as the 3rd edition of the Big Dreamers series, which focuses on international Black Women’s History, we remain committed to promoting multiculturalism and diversity. Our goal is to celebrate the Black community's accomplishments, contributions, and sacrifices through innovative, educational products that inspire future generations to dream big.

Canadian Black history is a story of perseverance, strength, and immense contributions. At Big Dreamers, we are honoured to share these stories and provide children with the tools to engage with history in meaningful ways. By doing so, we ensure that the legacy of Black Canadians is celebrated and passed on to future generations, making our country a more inclusive and culturally rich place for everyone.
